Making the decision to pack your bags and jet off on a new adventure is never going to be easy. Everyone goes through the same worries in their mind; will I be able to afford it? Will I make any friends? Where will I live? Will I get by not knowing any of the local language?
This is the point where you either put the idea of travelling to the back of your mind or you just take the plunge. I can honestly say I have never met anyone who regretted their experience working abroad. Meeting a whole new group of people, immersing yourself in a completely new culture and seeing new places is the most amazing experience. Sure, it might not be plain sailing every single day, but you will experience something, fresh, new and exciting and have so many stories to share when you return!
Let me put your mind at ease… By teaching English abroad, you can earn money while you travel so you will be able to fund your own adventure. TEFL teaching is a very sociable profession which allows you to meet new friends from all over the world and opens up a whole new set of contacts for you. Many TEFL employers will provide accommodation and support you in your new job with some on-site training. And don’t worry if you don’t know any foreign languages; TEFL teachers only speak English in the classroom. It’s always handy to learn a few phrases for while you’re shopping and meeting people after work though!
My advice? Don’t put it off. Travel now, or regret it later!
