About the ESOL course
ESOL stands for English for speakers of other languages, and this course is ideal for anyone who wishes to teach English to people who do not have English as their first language and are living in the UK.
Who takes this course?
You do not need previous experience or qualifications for this course. The entry-level course will introduce the essential knowledge that is required to work with ESOL learners.
The course is perfect for anyone new to ESOL and teaching for the first time. It is also appropriate for any teachers who have ESOL learners in their classes as well as those in Community Learning Development, engaging with ESOL learners.
What will I learn?
On completion of this Unit, you will be able to:
- Explain factors affecting ESOL learning
- Identify lexical, grammatical and phonological features of the English language.
- Describe language skills.
- Explain factors affecting language selection in ESOL tutoring.
What is the qualification?
The course is the first of two units that comprise the PDA (Personal Development Award) Introduction to Tutoring ESOL.
This Unit is Language and Learning in ESOL and is an SQA
accredited course. Currently, we do not deliver Unit 2 of this PDA.
How does the course work?
The course is entirely web-based and includes online resources, activities and assignments which will take you through the course.
An online tutor will assess your assignments and help you through the course.
While you will not be graded on activities and assignments, the marks you receive will indicate your progress.
You will have 4 final assessments that will determine whether you pass the course.
- 2 written assessments submitted to TEFL Org for assessment
- 2 invigilated exams to be taken at a test centre near you
Examination dates will be set throughout the year.
What is the difference between the ESOL course and the TEFL course?
The ESOL course is designed to take you roughly 30 hours and is, therefore, shorter than the online TEFL course.
If you have already completed an online TEFL course
, you will find many parts of the ESOL course familiar. However, the ESOL course is centred on learners living and working in the UK and the issues and difficulties they may encounter.
