The International Institute of Buffalo is a non-profit organization that provides services to immigrants and refugees, as well as survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking in the city of Buffalo, New York.
They are looking for volunteers to participate in their Home English Language Learners Outreach (or HELLO) program. In this program, volunteers travel to the homes of New Americans that are unable to make it to TEFL classes and teach basic English language skills in a one-on-one setting. These students include single mothers, survivors, clients that work during TEFL classes or have health issues that prevent them from getting to class. There is a commitment to provide these lessons for three hours a week over the course of eight weeks, with the option of extending lessons by an additional four weeks to explore basic reading and writing.
Not only can this one-of-a-kind opportunity provide experience in the teaching field, but it also allows deep connections to be formed between tutor and student.
No teaching experience is required to participate! Volunteer tutors are trained by Institute staff and provided a large library of materials that they can use to help create lesson plans. Training sessions are provided monthly both in-person at the Institute and by Zoom. Their next training session will be held on July 25th at 6:00PM. They hope to see you there!
Requirements
No teaching experience is required to participate in this program.
