They are looking for a motivated and passionate individual to join their growing school, which is located in Antananarivo, the heart of Madagascar, and is just entering its eighth year. The school is located in Ivandry, one of the nicest areas in Antananarivo which boasts a number of restaurants, shops, and bakeries, alongside smaller local establishments, including bars and food markets. All of their school buildings and shared accommodation houses are located in this area and are within a 15-minute walk of each other. The English-speaking community in Madagascar is growing, but as yet still small, so they try to ensure teachers get along well with one another.
All school holidays count as paid leave so that you can enjoy travelling around Madagascar. With wild lemurs living less than 100 miles away, there is always an opportunity, even on weekends, to experience all the beauty Madagascar has to offer.Existing staff members will be more than happy to offer recommendations and guidance, to help you get the most out of your time here.
The school has 165 students ranging between 2-18 years of age; split across 4 school buildings in the area. Students come from a variety of backgrounds. 30% are Malagasy, 30% are from Mauritius and other students come from all over the world including China, Congo, France, America.
Teachers are expected to deliver the National Curriculum for England to mixed ability classes. Course books and workbooks are provided, to give guidelines for lesson plans. Currently, they are searching for a person to teach Physics to 14-16 year olds and Chemistry to 11-13 year old, as well as 5 lessons per week of Personal, Social, Health education. The school is dedicated to offering a strong community feeling in each of its buildings, so class sizes are kept at a maximum of 25 students.You will also have a Teaching Assistant who is able to communicate in; Malagasy, French and English to help you in class.
They expect all staff to compete relevant Safeguarding courses, when you have completed your reference checks, you will be enrolled onto an online training course which will need to be completed before your arrival in Madagascar.
Teachers work 7:45am-4pm Monday to Thursday (with one day per week being 7:45-4:30pm to allow time for late duty) and 7:45am-1pm Friday (once per half term, this will be 7:45-3pm due to after-school club supervision). The school timetable is set so that this teacher will teach for 22 lessons a week (16.5 hours), with the other 13 lesson periods being kept for lesson planning, marking and other administrative duties.
The position comes with a wide range of benefits, including shared accommodation, utilities (including fibre optic wi-fi), a shared car, cleaning service, night guard, end of year bonus, medical cover, one round trip flight per year (including airport transfer), and the arrangement of your work visa.
If you have a relevant post-graduate qualification such as an M.Ed. or PGCE/PGDE then you will be entitled to a higher rate of pay, increased from £770 to £820 per month.
