On Thursday the 4th of October, we celebrated TEFL Org’s 10th birthday with an international- themed pub quiz at the Mercure Hotel in Inverness. To put our birthday celebrations to good use, we raised funds for our Charity of the Year – ActionAid UK. Through ticket sales, raffle tickets and donation tins we managed to raise a total of £680!
TEFL Org co-founder (and quiz master), Joe Hallwood said,
“We’re tremendously grateful for the generosity of everyone who attended our 10th birthday quiz night on Thursday, we are also very thankful to the local businesses who kindly donated raffle prizes for the event. We are absolutely thrilled with the amount we have raised for ActionAid UK.”
ActionAid UK is an international charity that works with women and girls living in poverty. The dedicated staff at ActionAid UK are helping to end violence against women and girls – not stopping until they are out of danger, out of poverty and on track to create the future they want.
ActionAid UK’s staff recognise the challenges and injustices that women and girls in poverty face, day in, day out. With a lack of education and opportunity for women and girls in developing communities, this results in a huge inequality between the genders – through humanitarian work and campaigning, ActionAid UK is working hard to bridge this gap.
Tsunami in Indonesia
On Friday the 28th of September, an earthquake hit Sulawesi in Indonesia – causing a tsunami which is estimated to have killed over 1,500 people. ActionAid UK has been working tirelessly to bring essential supplies to those who have lost everything. So far, ActionAid UK has managed to reach the most affected areas by providing temporary shelter, solar lamps and electricity generators whilst also distributing blankets, water and nappies to those in urgent need of help.
ActionAid UK’s Events and Community Engagement Manager, Nancy Gray said,
“We are delighted with TEFL’s fundraising efforts for ActionAid UK over the past year, and we’re so grateful to be a part of their 10th birthday celebrations. £680 is a fantastic amount to add to TEFL’s fundraising total for the year and will help transform the lives of women and girls living in poverty around the world. Right now, we are responding to the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi, Indonesia. Over 1,500 are confirmed dead and 200,000 are in desperate need of food, clean water and shelter. If you would like to support the appeal, then please visit our website here – https://www.actionaid.org.uk/donate/indonesia-tsunami-2018. Thank you so much for your support.”
