TEFL Experiences: Teaching English in Cambodia

9 August 2011

Our TEFL student Colleen emailed to tell us about her plans now she has completed her TEFL Org UK Course. She’s heading back to her second home in Cambodia!

Cambodia 11 I am now looking forward to flying to Siem Reap, Cambodia on 15th August to start my teaching position at Smart Kids International School and seeing Dave my partner and all my Cambodian friends again.

Just to let you know that Siem Reap, Cambodia is my 2nd home. In 2003 my partner and I left the UK for Cambodia to set up home and open a guesthouse and tours.

In 2003 we opened our first guesthouse, I ran it as the manager and Dave ran the tours.  We traded well until 2008 when the recession hit us, and we had to close the guesthouse which made my position as manager redundant.

Cambodia 10 As there was no work in Siem Reap, I returned to the UK late 2009, Dave is still there trading as Peace of Angkor Tours in Siem Reap. I have always wanted to return again.

Whilst managing the guesthouse, we met a lot of teachers, who stayed with us, from Japan, Hong Kong, China, USA etc…..who had mentioned  TEFL, so that is where I first heard the name, highly recommended.

Dave has moved into a new apartment, western style, and I will be sharing with him very near the school where I will be teaching.

I cannot wait to get back again, the Cambodians are fantastic people, it is a third world country, but having lived there already for 6 years, I am used to frequent power cuts, loss of water, the humidity…but above all I will be helping them again, they all want to learn English so much with so much enthusiasm that I know I will have a job for life…fantastic.

Good Luck to you all at TEFL…looking forward to my cert 🙂
