29 June 2012

Beginning a new career teaching English abroad can be both exciting and daunting at the best of times. Starting out in a new country as a mature TEFL teacher may also raise concerns over age discrimination and employment opportunities. To say that TEFL is only a young people’s market would not be true at all. We have had many mature TEFL graduates go off and find TEFL work with success and this should assure you that it can be done. Find out more about how you can use your maturity to your advantage and overcome any age bias in the TEFL industry.

Freelance TEFL teaching

If you are looking to get your foot in the door and start teaching English abroad you might want to consider freelance teaching as an alternative to teaching English in the private language school market. The advantage of doing this is that you are your own boss and there is no third party employer with age bias.

Finding eager students to teach should not be too difficult. English is in great demand and many parents want to supplement their children’s education with additional private lessons. Freelance TEFL teaching could mean you will be relocating before you have secure work lined up but if this was part of your plan to retire abroad anyway it could be worth it in the end.

Use your experience and consider specialising

In order to make yourself more attractive to employers you might want to consider specialising in teaching business English, especially if you have a background d in business yourself. In this sector, maturity can be an advantage. Think about your earlier career and how this could positively add to your contribution to TEFL. Teaching English online is also another option for TEFL teachers and is less vulnerable to age discrimination.

A mature TEFL teacher with a little experience can be an impossible combination for employers to resist and will set you above the younger novice teachers. Volunteering or working with children can be a good way to upgrade you to the experienced bracket. You can also improve your CV by taking one of our Specialist TEFL Courses. This will impress TEFL employers and put you in a strong position to find work teaching English abroad.
